Variety representation

The main phylosophy of Agromag is having our own varieties. That basicly means representing foreign breeders in Hungary but in the last few years we represent varieties of Hungarian breedres in Hungary. We also started to test and represent some Hungarian varieties in abroad. We domesticate and represent varieties from the following species:

  • maize
  • sunflower
  • winter wheat
  • spring wheat
  • winter barley
  • spring barley
  • triticale
  • soybean
  • hemp
  • oat

Agromag directly tests the varieties and handle the official registration procedure. We test 150-200 varieties in different level of trials each year. Today we represent 50 varieties of the above mentioned species. We have been producing and selling the seed directly of the represented varieties of the above mentioned species for 15 years.

Our biggest breeder partners are: Maisadour Semences, Poljoprivredni Institut Osijek, GK Kht. Szeged, Institut za Ratarstvo i Povrtarstvo Novi Sad, KRF Fleischmann Rudolf Kutatóintézet Kompolt, RAGT Cech, Istropol Solary, Bc Institut Zagreb.

Seed plant

The basis of the quality seed production is our modern seed plant situated at Telekgerendás, the south-eastern part of Hungary. The container dryer is suitable for drying 120 container in the same time. In 1999 we built a new dryer in order to increase the capacity of the reception of sunflower seed. Our small but modern seed plant is mainly designed for sunflower seed processing. That is why we have been producing sunflower seed for almost all the big breeders houses. At the seed plant there is a warehouse with the capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes of grain. The laboratory is suitable for any kind of examination except the inner contaminants (as pesticide, heavy metals, etc.).

Seed production

Maize seed

Most of the owners of Agromag has 20-30 years of experience in the corn seed production. With this professional background and farming partners we are able and pleased to produce maize seed for domestic and for foreign market. Most of our seed production today is from the hybrids we represent in the Hungarian market.

Sunflower seed

One of the most important activities of Agromag is sunflower seed production. It is even quite important in international scale since we are the biggest sunflower seed producer in Hungary. Finding good isolated fields is quite a big problem in today’s field structure. Processing of sunflower seed also has some special requirements. Our seed plant and production team is specified for sunflower seed. The greatest appreciation of our work is that we can produce seed year by year for the biggest variety owners. From the beginning of our activity we have produced seed for the following companies: Asgrow, GK Kht., Cargill, Van der Have, Interstate, Agrigenetics, Sigco Research, Mycogen, Novartis Seeds, Cereol Rt., Novi Sad Institute, Maisadour Semences, Advanta, Limagrain, Syngenta Seeds.

Cereals seed

In the cereal seed business we work in three levels. We do marketing activity and sell C1 and C2 seed of those varieties what we represent in Hungary. We have connection with the biggest seed producers and using their networks we are trying to increase the market share of our varieties. Around our seed plant we directly sell C2 seed. From winter barley we had quite a big portfolio, the best in Hungary, so we sell the seed of these varieties directly and we do not need to sell other varieties. But unfortunately our wheat portfolio is not strong enough that is why we also sell some Martonvásár and Szeged varieties in the region of our seed plant. We have just started our third level activity in the cereal seed business. We represent Hungarian varieties outside of Hungary. We can do that because we believe that our varieties are the best in the Central European area.

Soybean seed

We represent only one soybean cultivar in Hungary called Ika. That Osijek bred non GMO variety had the best performance in Hungary in the last three years according to testing data. So we believe big increase in this market.

Hemp seed

The use of hemp for fibre production has declined sharply over the last two centuries, but before the industrial revolution, hemp was a popular fiber because it is strong and grows quickly. Agromag started hemp seed production and business just in 2006. We believe that hemp can be used as energy plant and that makes hemp a widely produced plant again. It can be produced easily under poor conditions as well, it has extremely big biomass yield per hectare and it burns very well. Hemp can be used also to make many different items, such as: clothing, house building, animal feeding, cooking and other industrial, medical and cosmetically use. Even hemp can be produced almost everywhere in the world, its seed can be produced just in a small territory. Hungarian climatic and soil conditions are very good for that. We can produce the best category seed for sowing. We represent the following varieties in Hungary and in all over Europe: Hybrid TC, Kompolti, Monoica, Tiborszállási, Uniko B. Here you can find the description of the varieties.

Hybrid TC

Plant is light coloured. It has broad leaves and anthocyanin coloured male flowers. Form of hybrid seeds is flattened oval. After 115-118 days plants achieve technical maturity under Hungarian conditions. This variety is slightly higher then Kompolti hemp. Ratio of male plants in F2 generation is about 35-40% if it is cultivated for fibre. It means a light dominance of female and monoecious plants.

This hybrid is very good for industrial use. Stem yield is higher than Kompolti hemp’s stem yield. Fibre content is lower (28-30%) then that of Kompolti and UNIKO-B, but its quality is finer and strength is higher. Seed production of mother SC-line is very good. That is why the seed reproduction is easier and more effective than in the case of other varieties. The THC content is under 0.2 %.

There are no differences from other varieties in cultivation for fibre. Favourable population density requires 4-4,5 million germs/ha.

Kompolti

The oldest dioecious variety registered in Europe nevertheless its properties meet the recent demands of cultivation. It has fine and light coloured leaves and stem, which is moderately ribbed. The vegetation period in Hungary is 110-115 days from germination if it is cultivated for fibre. This variety achieves its ripeness in 150-160 days if cultivated for seed. Seed yield is quite low.

It has high stem productivity (11-12 t/ha) ad also high fibre content (31-35 %). The fibre is the highest one in Europe. Fibre fineness and strength are average. The THC content is very low: 0.1-0.15%.

Cultivation suggestions: The most suitable soils for this variety are alluvial ad chernozem type soils. Yield is increasable by nitrogen fertilizers but over dosage decreases the quality. High yield and good fibre quality can be achieved by proper population density, sowing of 3.5-4 million viable seeds/ha.

Monoica

Monoecious, free pollinating variety with medium maturity. Plant is medium dark. Leaves are broad. The high plants are of dense branching. Its vegetation period from germination to seed maturity lasts for 125-135 days under Hungarian conditions.

The variety can be used for fibre cultivation as well as for dual usage. Cultivating in traditional fibre stand 11-13t/ha yield of dry matter can be reach. The fibre content is lower (25-28%) then that of Kompolti, but its fineness is much higher. In dual usage 0.9-1t/ha seed yield is possible however that seed can be used only for feeding or human consumption. Sowing seed production is very complicated and it has much lower seed yield. The THC content is under 0.2 %.

Cultivation suggestions: There are no differences from other varieties in cultivation for fibre. Favourable population density requires 4-4.5 million germs/ha. For dual usage maximum 2 million germs/ha sowing rate is suggested.

Tiborszállási

The variety is a free-flowering, southern, diocious type. The leaves are dark green, the stem is a little bit lighter green and grooved. There are 9 mini-leaves on the leaves. The rate of the male hemps is 51-52%.

One of the advantages of the variety is that it is an early maturing type, and therefore it suits perfectly to the other grown plants. If the quantity of the rain is higher the maturing time is shorter. Vegetation period in Central-Europe is 105-110 days for fibre and 135-140 days for seed. If it is sown for fibre, the average height of the variety is 250-300 cm, if it is sown for seed the height can reach 4-5 m. The amount of stalk is 9-12 t/ha. In the way of biomass production the Tiborszállási hemp variety reaches 13-15t/ha yield, but it needs a different growing technology than for the fibre application. It has much more stem and fibre yield in Northern countries but it can not be produced for seed there.

The weight of 1000 seeds is 18-22 grams (there are differences between the different years). Fibre content is about 30%.

The THC content is quite low, under 0.2%.

The hemp variety is on the OECD list furthermore on the EU -A list, too.

Cultivation suggestions: it can be produced in any kind of soil, however better soil makes higher yield. Avoid its production from fields and soils with a lot of inland water. Too much rain after emergence can decrease yield very much. High yield and good fibre quality can be achieved by proper population density, but it can vary in different regions and also depends very much on the use of the plant.

Uniko B.

Plant height is similar to Kompolti’s height. General difference from other varieties is the sexual ratio. Females are dominant in the F1 generation, and partly dominant in the F2 generation. Presence of monoecious plants in F1 is common. Seed form and thousand seed weight of F1 generation is the same as in the case of Kompolti hemp as since for it is the maternal variety. The vegetation period of a variety cultivated for fibre is about 110 days from germination. UNIKO-B has high seed production capacity in F1 generation, because of the dominance of female plants and the F2 generation can be used only for fibre production.

Its stem yield is very good: 10-11 t/ha as well as its fibre content (28-31%). For fibre quality high fineness and favourable ratio of primary fibre is characteristic. The THC content is under 0,2 %.
